Why does an app with unpredictably timed rewards get reopened more than one with the same rewards on a steady schedule?

Two messaging apps carry the same friends and the same volume of replies. One tends to deliver them in a steady trickle; the other clumps them, silent for hours then suddenly alive. Months later, it is the unpredictable one you open forty times a day, checking a screen you just checked.

The intuition is that a reliable app should win — if it always has something for you, you should prefer it and check it more. Reliability is exactly the wrong property for retention. A source that pays off on a fixed and predictable rhythm invites you to check only when the payoff is due; a source whose timing you cannot predict invites you to check constantly, because any moment might be the one.

What is actually happening

Skinner’s analysis of reinforcement schedules established that behaviour maintained by unpredictable reward is far more resistant to extinction than behaviour maintained by regular reward: when the payouts stop, the person trained on randomness keeps responding longest, because no single missing reward is evidence that the source has dried up. The mechanism hides behind the content. Users attribute their return to the value of the messages — they came back because a friend wrote — and never to the schedule that made the timing unguessable. Because the reward is real when it arrives, the behaviour looks fully explained by that reward, and the role of its unpredictability leaves no trace the user can feel.
