The reason a brand story fails without a conflict
Narrative comprehension is triggered by a departure from the expected. A description in which nothing goes wrong is processed as information, not as a story.

Why is a brand story in which nothing goes wrong not remembered?
Correct answer: B
Option A is often true but would predict rejection, whereas conflict-free stories are usually accepted and then forgotten. Narrative requires canonicity and breach: the deviation is what the telling is about. Without it, nothing is held open for the audience to resolve.
A company publishes its story: founded with good intentions, staffed by talented people, committed to quality, growing steadily. Every sentence is true and nothing in it is remembered. The material has all the components of a narrative except the one that makes narrative processing start.
What everyone sees
A conflict-free story is treated as a positioning decision — stay positive, avoid airing difficulty, do not give critics material. The trade-off is understood as warmth against interest. What is missed is that without a breach there is no story to be uninteresting; there is a list of attributes with a chronology attached.
What is actually happening
Bruner argued that narrative is organised around canonicity and breach: a story exists because something deviated from the expected script, and the telling is the account of that deviation and its resolution. Aristotle’s analysis in the Poetics places the same requirement at the centre, with reversal and recognition as the events that make a plot rather than a sequence. Both accounts imply that harmony is structurally inert. A brand story with no breach gives the audience nothing to resolve, so there is no question held open, no reason to continue, and nothing for memory to attach the company to afterwards.
Why it stays hidden
The absence is hard to see because the copy reads well. Each sentence is clear, the tone is confident, and approval is easy to obtain internally precisely because nothing is at stake. The deficiency is invisible at the level of the sentence and appears only in what happens after reading, which nobody measures.
