Reading survives instrumental music but collapses under overheard speech. What does this show?

A colleague talks while you read an email. Afterwards you can report neither accurately. Swap the speech for instrumental music and both tasks proceed almost undisturbed. The difference is not volume or interest; it is that one pairing collides inside a shared processing channel and the other does not.

The failure is filed under poor multitasking or a lack of concentration, as though the problem were willpower and the remedy discipline. That account predicts that any two simultaneous tasks should interfere equally. They do not: reading survives music, driving survives conversation on a quiet road, and reading collapses the moment the second input is language.

What is actually happening

Baddeley’s model of working memory separates a phonological loop for verbal material from a visuospatial store. Written text is recoded phonologically as it is read, so incoming speech occupies the same loop and produces the irrelevant speech effect — an interference specific to meaningful verbal input, demonstrated repeatedly by Salamé and Baddeley. Instrumental music does not enter the loop in the same way, which is why the interference is selective rather than general.

Why it stays hidden

The domain-specific bottleneck hides because attention is described in everyday language as a single quantity, like fuel. Under that model, interference should scale with effort, so the selective collapse looks like a personal failing. The moment-to-moment experience offers no evidence either way, because the loop’s contents are never inspected — only the degraded output is.
