Why does careful examination of a two-option frame usually fail to reveal the missing third option?

A choice is framed as two options and the audience examines both rigorously. The examination cannot reveal the flaw, because the flaw is not inside either option. It is the absence of a third, and absences are not encountered during inspection — they have to be constructed by someone who is not looking at the material presented.

What everyone sees

False dilemmas are treated as errors that attention would catch, so a careless audience is blamed. Attention is directed at what is present. The failure is not one of vigilance but of generation, which is a different and much more demanding operation than evaluation.

What is actually happening

Fischhoff, Slovic and Lichtenstein presented people with fault trees describing how a system could fail and found that pruning whole branches barely changed the probability assigned to the remaining ones: participants did not compensate for what had been removed, because they did not notice it was missing. Tversky and Koehler’s support theory explains the arithmetic: judged likelihood tracks the support generated by an explicit description, so options that are never described receive no support at all. Together they predict that a two-option frame will be assessed as exhaustive by competent people, and that unpacking a third option raises its assessed plausibility from nothing simply by naming it.

Why it stays hidden

The structure hides because thoroughness feels like protection. An audience that debated both options at length is confident it examined the question, and the record shows a careful discussion. What the record cannot show is the option that was never mentioned, so the omission leaves no trace to be audited afterwards.
