A news site tested infinite scroll against paginated results. Time-on-site rose by seventy-six percent with infinite scroll. Users reported intending to stay the same amount of time in both conditions. The extra forty minutes were unplanned and, in exit surveys, unnoticed.
What everyone sees
Infinite scroll is treated as a usability improvement: it eliminates the friction of clicking “next page,” which interrupts the reading experience. The assumption is that removing friction helps the user get what they want faster. If they spend more time, it is because the content is engaging.
What is actually happening
Oulasvirta, Rattenbury, Ma, and Raita found that habitual checking behaviours are sustained by the absence of closure cues. A page boundary is a natural stopping point — a moment where the interface effectively asks “do you want to continue?” Removing it transfers the stopping decision entirely to the user, who must generate the impulse to leave from scratch. Alter’s work on behavioural addiction describes this as removing the “stopping rule”: without an external signal, the default action is to continue.
Why it stays hidden
The trap hides because the experience feels voluntary. The user never encounters a barrier, so they never feel pushed. The absence of a stopping cue is invisible by definition — you cannot notice what is not there, and the interface is designed so that nothing is there.
