Walking the same distance with and without passing through a doorway. What did the experiments find?

You stand up with a clear purpose, cross the hall, walk through a door and arrive with nothing. The intention was intact four seconds ago. Then a threshold was crossed, and the mind filed the previous room as finished.

What everyone sees

An ordinary lapse, filed under tiredness or age. The frustrating part is how complete the loss is — not a fading, but a clean absence, with the shape of the intention still there and the content gone.

What is actually happening

Working memory is organised into event models, and a physical boundary is one of the strongest cues to close one and open the next. Radvansky’s experiments demonstrated this in virtual environments as well as real rooms: walking the same distance without passing through a doorway produced better recall than the same distance with one. The doorway is not incidental — it is the trigger for the flush.

Why it stays hidden

Because the mechanism is useful and invisible. Discarding a finished context is what stops working memory filling with irrelevant detail; the failure is a side effect of a system doing its job. And the cue is architectural, so it never occurs to anybody that the room itself was involved.
