A safety-signage study tested reaction times to warning signs featuring a human silhouette versus a geometric hazard symbol. Participants identified the human-outline sign 110 ms faster on average. In high-clutter environments, the advantage grew to 180 ms. The body shape cut through noise that geometry could not.

What is actually happening

Downing, Jiang, Shuman, and Kanwisher identified the extrastriate body area (EBA), a cortical region specialised for processing human body forms. The EBA responds to body outlines within 150 ms — faster than general object recognition in the lateral occipital complex. New, Cosmides, and Tooby’s evolved-attention research confirmed that human forms receive processing priority consistent with ancestral threat and social detection needs.

Why it stays hidden

The body shape hides because human silhouettes are ubiquitous in signage and design. Their effectiveness is attributed to cultural familiarity rather than to a hard-wired neural pathway. Designers use human outlines by convention without knowing that the convention succeeds because it accidentally exploits the EBA’s dedicated processing channel.
