Why is a manual pull-to-refresh more habit-forming than an automatic timed refresh?

You reach the top of the feed, drag it down a centimetre past where it can go, and release. A spinner turns. Sometimes three new posts drop in; sometimes nothing. You do it again on the escalator, in the lift, at a red light, without deciding to.

What everyone sees

The gesture is read as a convenience — a way to check for updates that would otherwise require waiting. If that were all it did, a fixed refresh on a timer would serve the same purpose and spare the thumb. The manual pull survives because it does something the timer cannot: it hands the moment of not-knowing to the person, over and over, on demand.

What is actually happening

Ferster and Skinner catalogued how reinforcement delivered on a variable ratio — a reward after an unpredictable number of responses — produces the highest and steadiest rates of behaviour and the greatest resistance to extinction of any schedule they tested. Schüll’s field study of Las Vegas machine gambling shows the same schedule engineered into hardware: the pull, the pause, the occasional payout, tuned so the player stays inside a self-erasing loop she calls the machine zone. Pull-to-refresh is that schedule with a thumb instead of a lever. The variable outcome, not the content, is what the gesture is optimised to deliver.

Why it stays hidden

It stays hidden because each individual pull has an innocent justification — you really might have a message. Nobody experiences a schedule; they experience a series of reasonable checks. The design borrows the cover of genuine utility, so the compulsive shape of the behaviour is only visible in aggregate, in a screen-time report nobody consults while pulling.
