Why does spacing reminders produce better recall than massing them?

An email-marketing test compared three reminder emails sent on consecutive days against three sent at intervals of one, five, and twelve days. The spaced sequence produced forty-four percent higher unaided brand recall at the thirty-day mark. The massed sequence was forgotten within a week. Fewer impressions, better memory — spacing reversed the intuition.

What everyone sees

Marketers attribute the advantage to “not annoying the subscriber.” They believe spacing works because it avoids fatigue, not because it exploits a fundamental retrieval-effort mechanism. The subscriber, in turn, feels the brand is simply “well-timed” rather than strategically calibrated to force effortful recall at widening intervals.

What is actually happening

Ebbinghaus’s spacing effect, the most replicated finding in memory science, shows that distributed practice produces stronger long-term retention than massed practice. Bjork’s desirable-difficulties framework explains why: each spaced retrieval forces the brain to reconstruct the trace, and the effort of reconstruction strengthens the trace for future access. Massed repetition feels easy but produces shallow encoding because the trace is still active and requires no effort to reactivate.

Spacing hides because it feels like doing less. Sending fewer, more spread-out messages looks passive compared to an intensive campaign.
