Why is a narrative recalled better than an unrelated list of the same items?

Twelve unrelated words are close to unmemorable after a single pass. The same twelve words threaded into a short absurd story about a lamp, a goat and a bus timetable can be recalled almost completely a week later. Nothing was repeated more often. The items were simply given somewhere to be.

What everyone sees

The advantage is credited to interest: a story is entertaining, so more effort goes in. That cannot be the whole account, because the effect survives when the story is dull and when the reader is given no more time than the list-reader. Something structural is happening, not merely something motivational.

What is actually happening

Bower and Clark had participants learn word lists either by rote or by inventing a narrative linking them, and recall in the narrative condition was several times higher, with the story acting as a retrieval structure rather than as extra rehearsal. Work on situation models reviewed by Zwaan and Radvansky explains why: readers build a representation of who did what to whom, and each causal or temporal connection provides a path from one element to the next, so recovering any part of the chain drags its neighbours up with it. A list has no such paths. Every item must be found independently, from a cue that points nowhere in particular, which is why the fifth item of a list is not made easier by having recalled the fourth.

Why it stays hidden

The mechanism hides because retrieval feels instantaneous. The chain is traversed faster than introspection can follow, so remembering a story feels like reading it off a page rather than reconstructing it hop by hop. The reader concludes that stories are simply more memorable, without noticing that they were doing the walking.
