Why are achievement thresholds staggered so one is always near completion?

A ride-sharing app groups its driver achievements into overlapping tiers: when a driver is halfway through one badge, another is already at eighty percent. Internal data shows that drivers with at least one achievement above seventy-five percent complete are nineteen percent less likely to go offline during a shift than drivers whose nearest achievement is below fifty percent.

What everyone sees

The overlapping progress is perceived as a side effect of having multiple achievements running simultaneously. Drivers describe the near-complete badge as “almost there anyway, might as well finish.” The architecture of the overlap is attributed to badge variety rather than to motivational design.

What is actually happening

Kivetz, Urminsky, and Zheng’s goal-gradient hypothesis shows that effort accelerates as the perceived distance to a reward shrinks. By staggering start points, the app ensures that the goal gradient is always steep for at least one achievement, sustaining motivation even when the user is far from other goals. Heath, Larrick, and Wu’s reference-point theory adds that near-complete goals serve as salient reference points that intensify the drive to close the remaining gap.

Why it stays hidden

The design hides because the driver attributes persistence to personal ambition. The “might as well finish” thought feels like a rational calculation, not a manufactured impulse. But the staggering was calibrated so that the “almost done” feeling never disappears — there is always a badge close enough to keep the driver online.
