Why admitting a flaw increases sales
A volunteered weakness is a statement against interest. It certifies the claims around it in a way no additional claim could.

Why can disclosing a genuine product weakness increase purchases?
Correct answer: B
Option A is a post-purchase satisfaction effect, not a purchase driver. Option C is a sentiment rather than a mechanism. Conceding inferiority on some dimensions raises judged credibility because it is inconsistent with a purely promotional motive, and two-sided messages show a small reliable credibility gain — with purchase effects depending on whether the disclosed negative is decision-relevant.
The listing says the finish scratches easily. Enquiries go up. The sentence is a genuine disadvantage, stated without hedging, and its effect is to make the eleven positive sentences beside it readable as information rather than as sales copy.
What everyone sees
Disclosure is priced as a cost — something given away that will reduce conversion. It is that, locally, on the disclosed attribute. What it buys is credibility on every other attribute, and buyers were already discounting those at a rate that outweighed the admission.
What is actually happening
Settle and Golden framed this in attributional terms: a communicator who claims superiority on some dimensions while conceding inferiority on others is judged more credible than one claiming superiority throughout, because the concession is inconsistent with a purely promotional motive. Eisend’s meta-analysis of two-sided advertising found a small but reliable positive effect on credibility, with effects on purchase intention conditional on whether the disclosed negative was relevant to the buyer’s decision — so the tactic works when the weakness is real and peripheral, not when it is central. Contemporary review platforms show the same pattern from a different direction, with uniformly perfect ratings reading as less trustworthy than distributions containing genuine criticism.
Why it stays hidden
The mechanism hides because the disclosed flaw is the visible part. Sellers reason about whether the admission will deter buyers, which is the measurable question, and cannot see the counterfactual: how heavily the positive claims were discounted before there was any evidence the seller would say something unflattering.

Why repetition without new evidence changes minds
The argument has not been updated. It has been repeated. Each repetition adds no information and adds familiarity, and familiarity is filed as agreement.
AdeptThe hidden part #0259Repetition does not add evidence. It adds ease. Ease is experienced as agreement, and the speaker needs nothing else.

The reason a rhetorical question is an assertion
The question mark at the end of the sentence is decorative. The sentence does not ask; it states. The interrogative form is there to make disagreement feel impolite.
AdeptThe hidden part #0577Form invites agreement, not answer. The rhetorical question is an assertion that has borrowed the immunity of an inquiry.

The hole in your pen cap is a lung
That small hole in the top of a ballpoint cap is not for airflow to the ink, or for pressure, or for manufacturing. It is there because people chew pens and occasionally swallow the cap.
