Option A can be false — the last steps are often the fiddliest — and low effort does not explain the nagging. Option C is implausible. Unfinished tasks near completion set up a tension system that keeps intruding until closure; a blank profile reads as not started and rests easily, while an almost-full one demands to be finished.
A blank profile you can ignore for months. But a profile that reports itself “90% complete,” with a bar and a short list of what is missing, will not leave you alone — you find yourself adding the last detail just to close the gap, to make the almost-whole thing whole, for no reward beyond the bar reaching the end.
What everyone sees
An empty profile and a nearly full one seem to demand the same remaining work, so neither should nag more than the other. The nearly full one is far more insistent because incompleteness close to completion creates a tension that distance does not. A blank state reads as “not started” and is easy to leave; a near-full state reads as “almost done,” and almost-done is a condition the mind treats as unfinished business demanding closure.
What is actually happening
Zeigarnik demonstrated that interrupted or unfinished tasks stay active in memory and keep intruding on attention until they are completed, whereas finished tasks release their hold. Lewin’s field theory supplies the underlying model: an unmet goal sets up a tension system that persists as a psychological force until the goal is reached, and the closer the goal, the more the near-completion sharpens that tension. A profile displayed as nearly complete converts a vague optional task into a specific open loop sitting just short of closure — precisely the configuration that generates the strongest pull to finish.
Why it stays hidden
The mechanism hides because closing the gap feels like a personal preference for tidiness rather than a response to a manufactured tension. The user believes they simply like things complete, not that a progress display deliberately placed them at ninety percent to make the remaining ten feel unbearable. Because the reward for finishing is often nothing but the full bar, the pull cannot be explained by any prize — which is exactly why its source stays hidden.
