Why do people accelerate their effort as they near a goal, even when the reward is unchanged?

Two stamps from a free coffee, customers start returning sooner between visits; a survey shows the bar near full and respondents answer the last questions faster than the first; a runner with the line in sight lengthens their stride. In each case nothing about the reward changed — only the distance to it — and the effort climbed anyway.

What everyone sees

Effort is assumed to track the value of the reward — you push hard for a big prize and coast for a small one. But the same reward summons more effort when it is near than when it is far, which means the burst near the end is not a response to what is being won. It is a response to how close winning has become, a pull that strengthens with proximity independently of the prize’s worth.

What is actually happening

Hull’s principle of the goal gradient, drawn from animals running faster the nearer they were to food, held that the strength of the drive toward a reward increases as the distance to it shrinks. Kivetz, Urminsky and Zheng resurrected the effect in human field data: café customers accelerated their purchases as they approached a free drink, website users rated songs faster as they neared a reward threshold, and the acceleration reappeared after each reset. The reward was constant throughout; only proximity varied, and effort rose and fell with it — evidence that nearness itself, not the prize, drives the final push.

Why it stays hidden

The effect hides because the burst near the end feels like ordinary motivation — you try harder because you are almost there, which seems too obvious to question. What stays invisible is that the same reward drew less effort when it was distant, so the closing sprint is not explained by the prize at all. Because progress displays make the endpoint continuously visible, the proximity that drives the effort is felt as personal determination rather than as a designed gradient.
