A warehouse worker loads pallets faster with music playing. A proofreader in the next room makes more errors. The music is identical. The difference is in what each task asks the brain to do with language.
What everyone sees
Music is treated as a single variable: it either helps concentration or hurts it, and advice splits accordingly. The possibility that the same track could do both at the same time, depending on the task, does not fit the one-variable model.
What is actually happening
The irrelevant sound effect, studied by Salmé and Baddeley, shows that spoken or sung material disrupts serial recall of verbal items but leaves spatial and motor tasks largely untouched. Perham and Vizard found that music with lyrics impaired reading comprehension relative to silence, while instrumental music produced a smaller or absent effect. The interference is within the phonological loop of working memory: when the task and the sound both demand verbal processing, they compete; when they use different channels, they coexist.
Why it stays hidden
The channel specificity hides because the listener’s experience is one undifferentiated environment. They do not sense which subsystem is occupied; they sense only that the work is going well or badly, and attribute the result to mood, preference or volume. The warehouse worker and the proofreader therefore give contradictory advice about the same music, and both are reporting accurately.
