Van de Ven and colleagues showed the effect on novel return routes, which rules out landmark familiarity. The mechanism is a violated expectation: surprise inflates the outward trip and deflates the return.
The drive to an unfamiliar destination takes forty minutes. The drive home, same road, same traffic, same speed, takes thirty — or so it feels. Clocked, the two are within a minute of each other.
What everyone sees
The common explanation is familiarity: you know the road better on the way back, so it passes faster. But the effect also appears on novel return routes, which rules out landmark recognition as the main driver.
What is actually happening
Van de Ven, van Rijswijk and Roy documented the return-trip effect and showed it occurs even when the return route is different, which implicates expectation rather than familiarity. The outward trip is typically underestimated beforehand, so it feels longer than expected; the return is then overestimated, so it feels shorter than expected. Zakay and Block’s attentional-gate model describes how attention to the passage of time itself inflates duration estimates. When surprise is absent, less attention is paid to passage, and subjective duration shrinks.
Why it stays hidden
The asymmetry hides because neither leg is timed. The traveller has only their felt duration, which they treat as a measurement rather than as a comparison against a forecast. The forecast itself is invisible — nobody notices that they expected the return to take longer — so the discrepancy is attributed to the road.
