Narrative Structure Entry #0548 Classified Declassified

Why a case study is structured like fiction

A case study has a protagonist, an obstacle and a resolution. That is a persuasive form, and it is not the form evidence takes.

Why is the narrative structure of a case study more than a presentation choice?

Situation, challenge, solution, result. Every case study on every vendor site follows it, including the ones about statistical infrastructure. Nothing about a procurement decision naturally has a hero, and the format supplies one because a reader without a protagonist stops reading.

What everyone sees

The structure is read as a clear way to organise information, chosen for the convenience of the reader. It is chosen for a stronger reason. Narrative form changes how the material is processed, and the change is one that suppresses the evaluation a reader would otherwise perform.

What is actually happening

Green and Brock found that being transported into a narrative was associated with reduced identification of false or questionable claims within it, with more transported readers showing greater belief change in the direction of the story. Escalas examined narrative processing of advertising and found that story-form messages were evaluated with less critical, argument-by-argument scrutiny than fact-form messages, and produced stronger affective connection. Applied to a case study, the form is doing something specific and largely invisible: it converts a set of claims that could be checked individually into an experience whose parts are processed as a unit. The result section can then carry a figure that would not survive isolation.

Why it stays hidden

The mechanism hides because nothing in a case study is false. The client exists, the figure is real, the timeline is accurate, and a reader who verifies every element will find it verified. What is not available for verification is the causal claim the sequence implies, and the sequence is where the persuasion lives.

Narrative form converts checkable claims into a single experience. The verified parts remain verified; the causal claim between them is never stated.
