You start logging every run, and a counter tracks consecutive days. Soon the counter is running the show: you run on days you should rest to protect the tally, you feel the run less as movement and more as a number to secure, and the activity you began for pleasure has been reshaped by the act of counting it.
What everyone sees
A counter is assumed to be a neutral observer — it records the behaviour without touching it, the way a thermometer reports temperature. Measuring an activity changes it. A visible running tally introduces a new stake, the tally itself, that competes with the original motive; it raises the cost of any interruption and can crowd out the intrinsic enjoyment that started the behaviour, so the thing counted is no longer the thing it was.
What is actually happening
Campbell’s law holds that the more a quantitative indicator is used to steer behaviour, the more it distorts and corrupts the very process it was meant to monitor — measurement is never inert once it becomes a target. Etkin’s experiments on personal quantification demonstrated the intimate version: giving people a count of an enjoyable activity increased how much they did it but reduced how much they enjoyed it and how likely they were to continue once the counting stopped, because attention shifted from the experience to the number. Counting the days thus reshapes the behaviour twice over — raising the stakes of a break and hollowing out the intrinsic reason the behaviour existed.
Why it stays hidden
The change hides because the counter looks like pure benefit — more data, more consistency, visible proof of effort — so its corrosive side is never suspected. The person notices they are doing more and takes the counter to be working exactly as intended, not seeing that enjoyment has quietly leaked away and that stopping now feels costlier than the activity warrants. Because the tally rises reassuringly, the distortion it introduces is mistaken for success.
