The decisions were unrelated; the depletion was not.

Managers attribute their afternoon leniency to “giving people the benefit of the doubt.” They do not connect the morning’s cognitive load to the afternoon’s lowered standards. The time gap feels like a reset, but the resource pool does not refill by merely watching the clock — it requires rest, glucose, or a genuine cognitive break.
What is actually happening
Baumeister’s strength model of self-regulation proposes a single, domain-general resource that is consumed by any act of deliberation, impulse control, or effortful evaluation. Hagger, Wood, Stiff, and Chatzisarantis’s meta-analysis confirmed cross-domain depletion: exertion in one domain (scheduling) impairs performance in an unrelated domain (evaluation). The depletion transfers because the resource is unitary.
Why it stays hidden
Cross-domain depletion hides because the tasks look unrelated. Scheduling and performance review share no content, so the manager has no reason to suspect a connection. The depletion is like a phone battery draining across apps — each app seems independent, but they all draw from the same charge.
