After four recalls, confidence in the exact wording rose by thirty-five percent even though accuracy had drifted by twelve percent. The claim did not become more correct; it became more fluent, and fluency was mistaken for fidelity.

Consumers believe their memory is stable. Each recall feels like accessing a fixed file rather than rebuilding one. The growing confidence is attributed to being sure of the facts, not to the repetitive strengthening of a potentially inaccurate reconstruction.

What is actually happening

Roediger and McDermott’s retrieval-enhanced suggestibility research showed that each retrieval act reconsolidates the memory trace, potentially incorporating post-event information while simultaneously increasing subjective confidence. Nader’s reconsolidation hypothesis adds that memories become labile during retrieval and are re-stabilised in an altered form. Fluency from repeated reconstruction is then misattributed to accuracy via the processing-fluency heuristic.

Why it stays hidden

The mechanism hides because recall feels passive. People experience retrieval as reading a page, not as rewriting one. Each “read” subtly edits the text, but the edits are invisible because the previous version is overwritten. By the fourth recall, the memory is largely a product of the recalls themselves.
