An online retailer tested a pre-ticked newsletter opt-in on the checkout page after a five-step purchase flow. The opt-in survived in eighty-four percent of sessions. Moving it to the first page — before any decisions — dropped survival to fifty-one percent. The tick did not become more appealing; the user’s ability to remove it became weaker.
What everyone sees
Users believe they opted in because they were interested. Post-purchase surveys show subscribers attributing their sign-up to genuine curiosity. They do not connect the pre-ticked box’s survival to the five screens of decisions that preceded it and consumed the executive function needed to notice and undo the tick.
What is actually happening
Johnson and Goldstein’s default-effect research showed that defaults are disproportionately accepted because changing them requires effortful deliberation. Baumeister’s ego-depletion model adds that this effort is drawn from a pool that prior decisions have already drained. The combination — a default that requires effort to override, presented after the effort pool has been emptied — is the most reliable conversion architecture in digital design.
Why it stays hidden
The tick hides because it is pre-selected. The user would need to notice it, evaluate its consequence, and actively untick it — three steps that each require the self-regulatory resources the flow has already consumed. The path of least resistance is inaction, and inaction leaves the box checked.
