Why does a precisely specified figure resist counter-offers better than a round one?

Ask for 4,000 and the counterparty opens by suggesting 3,000. Ask for 3,847 and they come back with 3,700. The second request is barely smaller than the first, yet it is treated as harder to move, because it carries an implicit assertion that the number came out of something rather than off the top of a head.

What everyone sees

Precision is read as honesty or as pedantry depending on taste, and either way as a stylistic matter. It is functioning as a signal about the sender’s knowledge. A round number announces that the sender did not need to be exact, which usually means they could not be, and the receiver adjusts their estimate of how much slack the figure contains.

What is actually happening

Janiszewski and Uy found that precise anchors produced smaller adjustments than round ones of similar magnitude, consistent with people adjusting along the scale the anchor implies — units for a precise figure, larger increments for a round one. Mason, Lee, Wiley and Ames tested this in negotiation and found precise opening offers drew more conciliatory counteroffers and raised the recipient’s estimate of how well informed the proposer was. So the same quantity behaves differently depending on how it is written, and the difference is an inference about the sender’s access to information. Automated pricing systems in 2026 exploit this without any human choosing the digits, which means precision now signals a calculation that may have been made by something with no view about fairness at all.

Why it stays hidden

The signal hides because both parties experience the exchange as being about the amount. Nobody says the level of precision moved them; they report that the offer seemed reasonable. The number’s form is doing work that gets attributed to the number’s size, and the accounting is never separated.
