What everyone sees
Durability is credited to timeless themes, which explains nothing because it is the observation restated. The more specific claim is available: what recurs is a small set of relational structures — a lack, an attempt, an obstruction, a resolution — and these are defined over roles rather than over things.
What is actually happening
Propp analysed a corpus of folktales and found that variation lived in the characters and objects while the sequence of functions — the acts performed, defined by their consequence for the plot — remained highly constrained, so tales differing entirely in surface shared an underlying order. Thompson’s motif index documents the same recurrence at the level of motifs across widely separated traditions. What this does not license is the stronger popular claim that all stories reduce to a fixed small number of plots; that literature is contested and the counts on offer are not derived by any reproducible method. The defensible version is narrower: plot functions are defined over roles, and roles survive the replacement of everything that fills them.
Why it stays hidden
The recurrence hides because surface is what readers notice and discuss. Reviews, recommendations and marketing all operate on setting, period and register, so two structurally identical stories are shelved apart and never compared. The similarity is only visible after abstracting away everything that made either one worth reading.
