What everyone sees
A shopper sniffs a faint blotter and moves on. Days later, she recalls the scent with surprising clarity and returns to buy. She does not understand why the memory is so vivid; the faintness, which she barely noticed at the time, is exactly what allowed the scent to encode without interference.
What is actually happening
Research on subliminal olfactory encoding shows that scents below the threshold of full conscious attention can still be encoded into long-term memory. Strong odours trigger evaluative processing that may lead to rejection, while faint ones bypass evaluation and are stored with less interference, resulting in stronger incidental recall.
Why it stays hidden
The hidden mechanism is evaluation bypass through low intensity. A strong scent demands a judgement — like it or not — and the judgement creates a filter. A faint scent avoids that demand, entering memory without passing through the like-or-dislike gate. The result is a memory uncontaminated by resistance, free to resurface later and pull the customer back.
