What everyone sees
A shipping fee of a few pennies versus free shipping. Rationally, near-identical. In practice, the free option converts several times better and people will happily add items they do not want to reach the threshold.
What is actually happening
At any non-zero price you run a cost-benefit calculation. At zero the calculation is skipped, because there is no downside term to weigh. Behavioural economists call this the zero-price effect: free removes the perceived risk of loss, and loss aversion is far stronger than the pull of a small gain. The one-cent difference is not one cent of value — it is the difference between deliberating and not deliberating.
Why it stays hidden
Because it survives being explained. You can know the mechanism perfectly and still reach for the free option. Every subscription trial, freemium tier and “free delivery over $35” line on the internet is built on that stubbornness.
