Why do people rate an irreversible choice more favourably than the same choice with a return window?

Gilbert and Ebert showed the effect and also showed that people predict the opposite. Dissonance reduction is not face-saving; it is a genuine change in how the chosen option is perceived once alternatives are no longer available.
Two groups receive the same print. One group is told the choice is final. The other is told they can swap for a different print within a week. After the week, the group with no option to swap rates their print more favourably than the group that could have swapped but did not.
What everyone sees
A return window looks like a pure benefit — insurance at no cost. The prediction is that having the option to swap should produce higher or equal satisfaction, since the worst case is that the option goes unused. What happens is the opposite.
What is actually happening
Gilbert and Ebert demonstrated this effect: participants who made irreversible choices were more satisfied than those who made reversible ones. The explanation runs through cognitive dissonance: once a choice is final, the psychological immune system works to justify it, upgrading the chosen option and downgrading the alternatives. A return window suspends this process, because the comparison remains active as long as reversal is possible. Festinger’s original dissonance theory predicts that post-decision dissonance reduction is stronger when the decision is harder to undo.
Why it stays hidden
The mechanism hides because people predict the opposite. Gilbert and colleagues showed that forecasters expect the return option to raise satisfaction, which means they do not understand how their own justification system works. The closed door is perceived as a constraint, and constraints are assumed to reduce welfare; in this case the constraint is what produces it.
