Why a bestseller list creates the bestseller
A ranking that reports demand also produces it. Appearing on the list raises subsequent sales, so the measurement becomes part of what it measures.

A title crosses a threshold in one week and appears at the bottom of a list. The following week its sales rise, though no review appeared, no advertisement ran and no price changed. The list did not merely record the title’s position. It supplied a reason for the next buyer to choose it.
What everyone sees
Readers treat the chart as a thermometer: a neutral instrument reporting a temperature that exists independently of the reading. Publishers treat placement as a reward for performance already achieved. Both descriptions are accurate about the past and silent about the effect the reading itself has on the following week.
What is actually happening
Sorensen’s analysis of bestseller list appearances found a measurable causal sales effect, particularly for first-time authors, and Salganik, Dodds and Watts showed experimentally that displaying popularity information makes outcomes both more unequal and less predictable across parallel worlds. A ranking is therefore an input as well as an output; success becomes partly self-confirming once it is displayed.
Why it stays hidden
The feedback loop hides because it is indistinguishable from merit at the level of any single title. A book that sells well after charting looks like a book that deserved to chart, and often it is. What cannot be seen from inside one history is the comparable title that missed the threshold by a small margin and never received the same amplification.
