Why do luxury cars pipe synthesised engine noise through the speakers?

A luxury sedan’s turbocharged engine was engineering’s triumph — quiet, smooth, efficient — and a sensory disappointment: it sounded weak. So the manufacturer piped a synthesised engine note through the cabin speakers, adding bass, growl and harmonic richness that the real engine no longer produced. The driver heard power; the engine delivered efficiency; and the gap between the two was filled by a sound file. The car was performing better than ever and needing its speakers to say so.

What everyone sees

A driver accelerates and hears a satisfying roar. The car feels powerful and responsive. The driver does not suspect the sound is augmented; he treats it as the engine’s natural voice, and the auditory cue — deep, rich, alive — confirms the performance he already expects from the brand. The synthesised sound and the engine’s output are experienced as one.

What is actually happening

Research on active sound design in automotive shows that manufacturers use speaker-delivered sound augmentation to restore the auditory signatures that modern efficient engines no longer produce naturally. The practice is widespread: the synthesised tone is synchronised to engine RPM and throttle position, creating a convincing illusion of a more powerful engine. The driver’s perception of performance is partly manufactured by sound, not generated by the drivetrain.

Why it stays hidden

The hidden mechanism is auditory augmentation filling a sensory gap left by engineering progress. The engine improved and its sound diminished, so the manufacturer replaced the missing sound with a designed one. The driver’s sense of power is partly a speaker product, and the illusion holds because the augmented sound is synchronised to the driving inputs, making it indistinguishable from the real engine to the ear.
