An outcome that almost succeeded is registered as skill developing rather than as a loss. In a chance process there is no such thing as almost.

There is no payout and no improvement. The inference that proximity predicts success is well trained on skill tasks and misapplied here — Langer’s illusion of control describes exactly this transfer, and near-miss studies find raised persistence without better outcomes.

What everyone sees
Near-misses feel informative because in most of life they are. A shot that hits the post, an exam missed by a mark, a bid narrowly beaten — in skill domains, proximity to success genuinely predicts eventual success, so the inference is well trained. It is being applied to a process where distance from the outcome carries no information at all.
What is actually happening
Reid described the near-miss effect in gambling, and later experimental work found that near-misses increase persistence relative to plain losses while producing no better outcomes. Clark and colleagues observed that near-misses recruited overlapping responses to wins and raised the desire to continue. Langer’s work on the illusion of control shows the general form: cues associated with skill contexts, such as choice, familiarity or proximity, produce felt control over chance events.
Why it stays hidden
The mechanism hides because the near-miss looks like feedback, and feedback is what learning consumes. Nothing marks the difference between a process where proximity is informative and one where it is not, and the player has no reason to test which they are in. Systems that can arrange their own outcome frequencies have every reason to keep near-misses common, and their frequency is not published.
