Why is a phone number recalled better when sung than when printed?

A phone-number recall test compared a number presented as a jingle against the same number in a billboard. After twenty-four hours, jingle participants recalled the full number in sixty-one percent of cases; billboard participants scored eighteen percent. The digits were identical; the tune tripled the recall rate by binding each digit to a note.

What everyone sees

Listeners assume the jingle was “catchier” and attribute their recall to the tune being entertaining. They do not isolate the specific mechanism: each note provides a temporal cue for the corresponding digit, creating a chain that the brain can replay. The entertainment is a byproduct; the retrieval chain is the payload.

What is actually happening

Rainey and Larsen’s research on musical mnemonics showed that melody provides an external temporal scaffold that sequences verbal items, reducing the interference that free-standing items suffer in short-term memory. Peretz’s modular-processing model adds that musical and verbal information are stored in parallel systems, giving the sung number a dual trace. The auditory-motor loop rehearses the tune involuntarily, reactivating the digit sequence without deliberate effort.

The jingle hides because it seems like a dated advertising trick.
