Zahavi’s handicap principle and Spence’s signalling model converge on the same point: a display is credible in proportion to what it costs the sender, because cheap signals can be sent by anyone. The inefficiency is not incidental — it is the mechanism.
A mechanical watch keeps worse time than a quartz movement costing a hundredth as much. This is not a manufacturing failure and the buyers know it. The inefficiency is the product: a device that is expensive precisely because it is harder to make than the accurate alternative it replaced.
What everyone sees
Luxury goods are explained as craftsmanship, heritage or irrationality, depending on the observer’s sympathies. All three accounts treat the price as either justified by quality or unjustified by anything. Neither treats the cost itself as the function, which is what the persistence of the category requires explaining.
What is actually happening
Zahavi’s handicap principle showed that a signal is reliable when it is costly enough that low-quality senders cannot afford to fake it. Grafen formalised the condition. Spence’s signalling model applies the same logic to markets: a costly, observable act conveys unobservable information because the cost differs by type. A watch that consumes disposable income credibly reports the existence of that income; a cheap imitation cannot.
Why it stays hidden
The logic hides because waste offends efficiency norms, and efficiency is the lens through which purchases are usually judged. Buyers also describe their motive in the vocabulary of craft and pleasure, which is genuine and complete as an experience. The signalling function operates at the level of what the market sustains, not at the level of what any individual reports wanting.
