Why a single-page checkout changes the basket size

Why does compressing a checkout flow raise order value as well as completion?

A retailer collapses a four-step checkout into one page. Completion rates rise, which was the intention, and average order value rises too, which was not in the brief. Fewer pages meant fewer moments at which a customer looked at the running total and removed something.

What everyone sees

Checkout optimisation is framed as removing friction so that people who already decided can finish. That framing assumes the decision was complete before checkout began and that the remaining steps only add cost. Some of those steps were doing evaluative work — they were where the basket got audited.

What is actually happening

Moe and Fader modelled visit-to-purchase conversion at online stores and found purchasing behaviour developing across a session rather than arriving fully formed, so what happens during the flow changes the outcome rather than merely permitting it. Research on cart abandonment by Rajamma, Paswan and Hossain identified checkout complexity and unexpected cost disclosure among the main drivers of exit, which is why step reduction works. Both together explain the double effect. Steps are exits, and exits are also review points, so removing them raises completion and simultaneously reduces the number of occasions on which an item is reconsidered. The design change is honest and its consequences are not symmetrical between the two parties.

Why it stays hidden

The second effect hides because it appears in a metric nobody attributed to the change. Completion was the target and was measured against a baseline; basket value moved at the same time and is normally explained by merchandising or seasonality. The causal link runs through pauses that were deliberately eliminated, and eliminated pauses leave no data.
