Intuition test — answer before you read on

Showing two options converts better than showing three. Why?

A product page shows two options side by side and conversion is higher than when it shows three. The content is the same, the prices are the same, and the third option is the one most users would have ignored anyway.

What everyone sees

More options are assumed to be better: the customer who wants the third one can choose it, and the rest are not harmed. The cost of the third column is invisible because it is cognitive rather than spatial — nobody sees the extra processing that turns comparison into ranking.

What is actually happening

Dhar and Simonson showed that adding a third option changes the comparison strategy: with two, the buyer identifies which is better on each attribute; with three, they must rank, which introduces a harder computation and raises the probability of deferral. Iyengar and Lepper demonstrated that extensive choice reduces the likelihood of purchase. Sher and McKenzie argued that smaller sets simplify the justification required for a decision, which is why pairs convert better than triples even when the third option adds genuine value.

Why it stays hidden

The cost hides because the buyer experiences difficulty, not its source. They feel uncertain or overwhelmed, and attribute the feeling to the decision itself rather than to the number of columns. The designer, seeing a dip in conversion, is more likely to adjust prices or copy than to remove the column, because removing an option looks like reducing the offer.
