A waiter who has not yet been paid can recite the order; once the bill is settled it is gone within minutes. Episode endings that cut mid-action produce more return viewing than tidy ones. In both cases the item that keeps its grip is the item the system has not been allowed to close.
What everyone sees
The pull is described as curiosity, as though the mind wanted the missing information. Curiosity would be satisfied by being told the answer, and often it is not: people report continued nagging after learning how a story ended, and report none at all for questions they never began to work on. What matters is whether a process was started and stopped, not whether a fact is absent.
What is actually happening
Zeigarnik reported that interrupted tasks were recalled substantially more often than completed ones, and the observation has been extended and complicated since. Marsh, Hicks and Bink measured activation for completed, uncompleted and partially completed intentions and found heightened accessibility specifically for the uncompleted ones, with activation dropping once the goal was discharged. Replication history matters here: the raw recall advantage has proved sensitive to how interruption is staged and to how committed the participant was, and several attempts have produced weak or null results. The surviving claim is narrower and more useful — an open goal stays accessible while it is open, and goal completion, not information acquisition, is what closes it.
Why it stays hidden
The mechanism hides because the open entry presents itself as interest in the content. The person believes they want to know what happens next, so they explain their attention by the appeal of the material, and the material gets credit that belongs to the interruption. Anyone who has finished a mediocre series purely because they started it has met the accounting system directly.
