Why does bundling allow a component with little standalone demand to persist?

Four services for a single monthly figure. Three get used weekly, one has never been opened, and the subscription is renewed without hesitation. Priced separately, the fourth would have been declined in two seconds — which is exactly why it is not priced separately.

What everyone sees

A bundle is read as a discount, a volume deal on things the buyer wanted anyway. The discount is the visible part. The structural function is different: bundling removes the individual accept-or-reject decision from every component, so the weakest item is never evaluated at all.

What is actually happening

Adams and Yellen showed that bundling lets a seller extract more surplus than separate pricing when buyers’ valuations of the components vary inversely, because the bundle price can sit below each buyer’s total valuation while exceeding what either would pay for one item alone. Bakos and Brynjolfsson extended this to goods with near-zero marginal cost and found the advantage grows with the number of items bundled: aggregating many goods narrows the dispersion of total valuations, so a single price captures nearly all of the demand curve. The consequence for the buyer is arithmetic rather than psychological. The bundle is worth its price, and so is the subset that is actually used.

Why it stays hidden

The unwanted component hides because nobody experiences a loss. The buyer got value, the total was fair, and the unused item cost nothing identifiable. Cancellation decisions are made against the bundle price, so the item that would fail on its own is protected by the three that pass.
