Habit Loops Entry #0317 Classified Declassified

Why the last repetition is the one you remember

A remembered episode is not the sum of its moments. It is reconstructed from a peak and an ending, which is why how something finished governs whether it repeats.

Intuition test — answer before you read on

Why does the ending of an activity affect whether it is repeated?

Two identical training sessions, one ending with the hardest set and one ending with something easy and successful. Reported enjoyment differs sharply, and so does the probability of returning next week. Total effort was the same. The difference sits entirely in the final two minutes.

What everyone sees

Whether an activity was worth doing is assumed to be a verdict on the whole activity, weighted by its duration. Retrospective judgement does not work by duration. It samples the most intense moment and the final one, and builds a summary from those, which means the ending is doing work far out of proportion to its length.

What is actually happening

Kahneman, Fredrickson, Schreiber and Redelmeier had participants undergo an unpleasant experience twice, once shorter and once identical but with a milder final period appended, and found the longer version — objectively containing more discomfort — was preferred for repetition, because its ending was better. Ariely and Carmon described the general form as gestalt characteristics of experiences: summary evaluations depend on features such as peak, end and trend rather than on aggregation over moments. The consequence for habit is direct and slightly perverse. The version of a routine that is easiest to sustain is not the one with the lowest total cost, but the one that finishes well, even if finishing well means adding effort.

Why it stays hidden

The mechanism hides because the summary is stored and the moments are not. A week later there is no record of the middle of the session to consult, only the verdict, and the verdict presents itself as a memory of the whole. Nobody notices having been asked a question about the ending and having answered it about the hour.

Adding an easy final stretch can make a harder session preferable. The summary is built from the end, not from the total.
