What everyone sees
Readers believe they ignored the banner because its content was irrelevant. They believe they read the native unit because its topic was interesting. The format’s role in admission or exclusion is invisible; readers attribute both outcomes to their own editorial judgement rather than to learned visual templates.
What is actually happening
Benway and Lane’s foundational banner-blindness study showed that web users develop a schema-driven suppression for rectangular ad formats. Burke, Hornof, Nilsen, and Gorman extended this with the inhibition-of-return concept applied to habitual ad locations. Native advertising bypasses suppression because it matches the editorial schema rather than the ad schema, exploiting the same pattern-matching mechanism that protects the user from traditional ads.
Why it stays hidden
Banner blindness hides because it feels like quality control — the brain seems to be filtering irrelevant noise. In reality, it is filtering by shape and position, not by relevance. A perfectly relevant banner is still suppressed, and a commercially motivated native unit still gets processed, because the schema sorts by format before evaluating content.
