Why splitting a choice into steps changes the outcome
The same decision, taken in one pass or in four, produces different answers. Each completed step becomes the reference point for the next one.

A buyer given one total budget question spends less than the same buyer taken through four sequential options. Why?

Decomposition replaces one comparison against the budget with a chain of comparisons against the previous step. Anchoring, local consistency and partitioned pricing all push the same direction, and the total — the only figure that would trigger resistance — stays off screen until the end.
A buyer asked for a total budget names one figure. The same buyer asked for a chassis, then a trim, then a warranty, then a finance term arrives at a total that is reliably higher — and reports feeling in control at every stage. No individual step was unreasonable. The sequence did the work that no single question could.
What everyone sees
Staged choices look like considerate design: complexity broken into digestible pieces, with the customer confirming each one. Buyers report the process as clear and unpressured, and sellers can point to explicit consent at every stage. The staging is genuinely easier to complete, which is precisely why its effect on the total is so hard to attribute to the staging.
What is actually happening
Sequential decisions violate the assumption that preferences are stable across framings. Each accepted step raises the anchor for the next, converts an open budget into a set of small increments, and creates local consistency pressure: having chosen the better chassis, the matching trim follows. Research on partitioned pricing and on sequential concessions shows that decomposition suppresses comparison against the total, because the total is never on screen until the end.
Why it stays hidden
The structure hides because every part of it is defensible. Each step is voluntary, each increment is small, and the seller never misstates a price. There is no moment where the buyer is pushed, so there is no moment to point at afterwards. The effect lives in the ordering, and ordering is the one property of a process nobody thinks to audit.
